Glossary:
Photovoltaic (PV)
A term used to describe the process of converting sunlight directly into electricity.
Solar Array
A group of solar panels installed together to generate electricity.
Grid-Tied System
A solar system connected to the utility grid. It allows you to use grid power when needed and send excess solar energy back.
Off-Grid System
A solar system that operates independently from the utility grid, with batteries to store energy and often a backup generator.
Battery Storage
A system that stores excess solar energy so you can use it later—like at night, during utility peak demand or during a power outage.
Time-of-Use (TOU) Rates
Electric rates that vary depending on the time of day, which can affect solar savings.
Interconnection
The process of connecting your solar system to the utility grid.
Kilowatt (kW)
A unit of power that measures how much electricity is being used or produced at a given moment.
Kilowatt-hour (kWh)
A unit of energy that measures how much electricity is used over time. This is what you see on your electric bill.
System Size
The total power capacity of your solar system, usually measured in kilowatts (kW).
Production
The amount of electricity your solar system generates, typically measured in kWh.
Monitoring
A system (often an app) that lets you track your solar production in real time.
Commissioning
The process of turning your system on after installation and approvals are complete.
LIVING OFF GRID IN THE WINTER
Angle pole mounts to 52 degrees.
Brush snow off ground or roof mounts.
SOLAR PANELS
Update Firmware.
Learn how to reset system.
INVERTER
Lithium-ion batteries need insulation or a heat source.
Lead-acid batteries need to be equalized.
Monitor battery discharge.
Update Firmware.
BATTERIES
Test that it turns on and settings are correct.
General Maintenance: oil, belts, coolant, air filters, battery & spark plugs .
GENERATOR
REDUCE ENERGY USE
Reduce loads on cloudy days (eg. washer/dryer).
Supplement heat with wood or propane.
Install weather stripping.
Turn lights off.
